How to help animals?

Where can I find help for a wild, injured or stray animal?

So, you have found an animal and want to help it. If it’s not a dog or cat, you might’ve decided that the zoological garden would be the best place to ask for help, but unfortunately, this is not the case.

1. Why can’t the Zoological Garden take in a wild or exotic animal?

The Zoological Garden is not a place to keep unwanted animals, but a breeding ground for endangered species. Every newcomer takes up the space and reduces the comfort of rare and endangered species, for whom the zoo is the only place where they can survive. In addition, an animal of unknown origin may bring diseases that will threaten the Garden’s inhabitants, and this would destroy many years of hard work of many people. Moreover, the Zoo would simply not be able to accommodate all the animals in need, nor would it be able to provide them with decent living conditions.

The Bird Asylum in the Warsaw Zoo only takes in wild domestic birds in need of help.

2. Whom should I contact after finding an injured animal?

Call 986 – the phone number of the Municipal Police Eco Patrol. In the cases of animal abuse, call the police – 997. Calls are free, and the lines are open 24 hours a day.

3. Where else can I find help for an animal I’ve found?

In the case of wild fowl – the Bird Asylum in the Municipal Zoological Garden in Warsaw. Hand over the bird to the security officers from the side of the Gdański Bridge; phone: (22) 670-22-07, http://ptasiazyl.zoo.waw.pl/

In the case of wild mammals – contact the Warsaw Municipal Forests, Korkowa 170A; phone: (22) 612 25 60, ext. 200 /24h/

In the case of dogs and cats – call the Shelter for Homeless Animals, Paluch 2; phone: (22) 846-02-36 available 24h

In the case of other domestic pets, including exotic birds and reptiles (the Zoological Garden only accepts reptiles from interventions of authorities such as the Police, Municipal Police or Customs), call foundations, such as Viva, Egzotyka, as well as individuals looking for new homes for unwanted animals, advertising on the Internet.

4. What to do with an animal that somebody does not want to keep anymore?

Abandoning an animal is a violation of the Animal Protection Act and is punishable by law. Owners should therefore show responsibility. They can also look for support on thematic Internet forums and from foundations, such as Viva or Egzotyka. Some individuals running “home shelters” also accept unwanted animals – their contact information is usually available on thematic Internet forums.
